The Brussels region is the first in the world not to allow the use of synthetic pesticides in agriculture

The use of synthetic pesticides in agriculture in the Brussels region will no longer be allowed from 2030. It is the first case that a European region has made such a decision, the non-governmental organization PAN Europe announced today.
The use of synthetic pesticides will no longer be allowed in the Brussels region from 2030. Other regions and countries are expected to follow later.
As the executive director of Pesticide Action Network Europe (PAN Europe) Martin Dermine pointed out in a press statement, the move of the Brussels region shows the European Commission the way forward. “This is the first time that a European region has used the directive on the sustainable use of pesticides to protect citizens from exposure to agricultural pesticides. The decision of the government in Brussels should be followed by other regions or countries in order to comply with EU legislation,” he emphasized.
As the organization reminded, member states and their regions have been able to implement the provisions of the directive on the sustainable use of pesticides into national legislation since 2009. Among the more important provisions, they point out the prohibition of exposure to synthetic pesticides to pregnant women and children and the provision of the use of organic pesticides or low risk substances.
“Since 2009, the European Commission has done nothing to ensure that member states implement the directive, which is supposed to protect citizens. Because of their inaction, children playing in their gardens next to agricultural fields or in public parks are directly exposed to neurotoxic or endocrine disruptors. It is therefore rather ironic that the seat of the European Commission, which is so reluctant to protect citizens and the environment from harmful pesticides, is in the first EU region without pesticides,” Dermine was critical.
The recent decision of the Brussels region not only concerns the prohibition of the use of synthetic pesticides in agriculture, but also in the case of private use by citizens and businesses. This ban will enter into force in 2025. According to PAN Europe, the mentioned region is also a pioneer in the field of limiting the use of pesticides in the EU. In 2013, it banned the use of pesticides in public areas such as parks, playgrounds and sidewalks. In 2016, it also banned the use of glyphosate for private purposes. In 2018, however, she also filed a lawsuit against the European Commission at the Court of Justice of the EU for its re-approval for a period of five years.
According to Dermane’s warning, scientific evidence shows that pesticides are transported over long distances. “In agricultural areas, the air is heavily polluted with pesticides, and the dust in households contains dozens of their toxic residues. Science shows us that there is no safe use of synthetic pesticides. The Brussels region’s decision is the only way to effectively protect human health and biodiversity,” said convinced Dermine.
