Current Weather breakdown in Europe

By | 13 September 2024

Just two days ago, the weather spoiled us at a pleasant 28 degrees Celsius. In recent years, we have been used to this. In recent years, the warm weather here in Slovenia has persisted until December. In the last two years, the summers were very hot in our country too, there were frequent hailstorms with real ice projectiles measuring up to 10 cm in diameter. They left behind the destruction and suffering of the farmers of crops, vegetables and fruits. The downpours literally washed away houses, destroyed bridges, and destroyed roads. Not once, several times in the last two years.
This time, just today and in these days, Europe is preparing for destructive floods of terrifying proportions.
In my home country, Slovenia, the rain falls like a bet. It was also joined by snowfall. Homes are flooded again, roads are closed, people are once again afraid of raging water, winds that drag everything that stands in their way, of premature cold that destroys crops, fruits, and vegetables.
Self-protection prevention and caution are mandatory, if various necessities force us to take different actions.
All of the above is known to many. But something may be worth special attention. A prayer for salvation in moments of danger on the lips, but in our daily life actions that are diametrically opposed to the necessary actions to “stop pouring gasoline on the fire.” People are guessing why and how this is possible. I won’t guess. I am publishing the three articles below, they are telling enough.

Europe faces historic floods: Rainfall could exceed records of the last millennium

Central Europe is preparing for extremely dangerous floods this weekend, which could be among the worst in recent decades. According to forecasters, the passage of Cyclone Boris is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, which could cause extremely high river levels and trigger dangerous floods in several countries, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria and Slovakia.

Meteorological services in the Czech Republic and Poland predict that in the next four days, up to 400 liters of rain per square meter could fall in certain areas of these countries, an amount that exceeds the usual monthly average by many times. In Austria and Slovakia, however, up to 200 liters of rain per square meter is expected, which also poses a serious threat to residents and infrastructure.

In anticipation of a strong storm, the affected countries have already started implementing preventive measures. Cultural and sporting events planned for this weekend have been canceled to reduce the risk of injury and ensure the safety of residents. Reservoirs along the dams were also emptied to absorb as much rainfall as possible and reduce the risk of flooding.

In Poland, the south of the country, especially the area around the cities of Wroclaw and Opole, is exposed to the greatest risk of flooding. Meteorologists have issued warnings for these areas, warning that there is a real risk of localized flooding on Friday and Sunday. Wroclaw, a city of 675,000 people, has already set up a crisis headquarters to monitor the situation and coordinate possible evacuations and other measures.

The Czech Minister of the Environment, Petr Hladík, warned that the situation could be similar to that of 1997 and 2002, when floods affected different parts of the country. In 1997, floods in the east of the Czech Republic, especially in the region of Moravia, caused the death of 50 people and caused multibillion-dollar damages. In 2002, the western parts of the country were hit by even worse floods, which claimed 17 lives.

Austrian army on alert

Authorities in Austria and Slovakia are also on high alert. The Austrian army is ready to send up to 1,000 troops if necessary to help rescue and protect residents and infrastructure. At the same time, the Slovak Meteorological Service pointed out that this time the precipitation could be the worst in a thousand years, even worse than that which affected the region in 2013, when it caused major floods throughout Central Europe.

With the passage of the cold wave over Europe, other weather inconveniences also appeared. The first snow fell on the Slovenian Kredarica, while a strong gale caused problems on the Slovenian coast. In Slovenian Istria, as much rain fell in a few hours as usually falls in the whole summer, which caused problems on the roads and in the infrastructure.”(2)

“Austria is preparing for century-long floods

Floods also affected the Czech Republic and Poland, with fatalities in Romania.

Abundant precipitation, accompanied in some places by storms and snow, also covered a large part of Austria today. In the south of the country, strong winds blow with gusts of up to 146 kilometers per hour, while in the north, up to 170 liters of precipitation fell per square meter. The heavy rains hit Lower Austria the most, where they expect century-long floods, foreign agencies report.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced today that heavy rains, and in some places also snowfall, affected almost all federal states, reports the Austrian press agency APA.

“The situation is deteriorating, especially in Lower Austria. The worst is yet to come, and the coming days will be even more difficult for the affected population and rescue services,” warned Nehammer after a meeting of the State Office for Crisis and Disaster Management (SKKM).

He added that firefighters, members of civil protection, the police and the army “are on high alert to help wherever their help is urgently needed.”

In Lower Austria, rescuers received 160 calls for help during the night, according to the German news agency dpa, the competent services announced.

The influx of the Danube can cause century-long floods
Authorities expect the Danube River to reach a once-in-30-year water level, while its tributary, the Kamp River, could cause century-long floods.

The Austrian Storm Warning Center (UWZ) warned, according to the British BBC network, that the previous rainfall records for the month of September could be exceeded in some areas within a few days.

A large amount of precipitation is predicted to fall in many regions over the next few days, especially in the mountainous areas of Upper and Lower Austria and in the north of Austrian Styria.

Up to a meter of snow in Tyrol
Up to a meter of snow has fallen in Tyrol so far, and rescuers are searching for a hiker who was buried by an avalanche, according to dpa.

Austrian state railways ÖBB advised all passengers to postpone non-essential travel, and part of the railway line in the state of Salzburg was closed due to heavy snowfall.

In the Austrian capital, firefighters have been called out about 150 times in the past 24 hours to clear shafts or pump out water that has entered basements due to heavy rainfall. Hurricane winds are also expected, local media reports are summarized by agencies.

Several people died in floods in Romania
Cyclone Boris has brought strong winds and heavy rains to several Central European countries since Thursday.

The Czech Republic is already struggling with floods due to heavy rainfall, and tens of thousands of people have been left without electricity due to storms. Floods are also being reported from Poland, where residents are already being evacuated in some parts of the south of the country, reports the German news agency dpa. Meteorologists expect the rains to continue. Some people died in the floods in Romania.

Rescuers rescued dozens of people from their homes in 19 areas in the eastern part of the country. Rescue services also released a video of flooded houses in one of the villages along the Danube, reports the French news agency AFP.

The affected area will be visited today by the Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who canceled his planned commitments to see the consequences of the floods.

Cyclone Boris has brought strong winds and heavy rains to several Central European countries since Thursday. Today, floods are already being reported from Poland and the Czech Republic, and some other countries are also preparing for them.

Very strong wind in Slovenia

Then the RS Environment Agency (Arso) issued an orange warning for the north of the country due to strong winds, meteorologist Urban Žagar told STA that so far the strongest gusts of wind have been recorded at higher altitudes, but the wind is still getting stronger.

Wind gusts reached up to 140 kilometers per hour at night in Kredarica, and up to 100 kilometers per hour in Ratitovec and Krvavec. In the morning, wind gusts in Lesce reached around 64 kilometers per hour. At the moment, the wind is gradually strengthening, the strongest gusts are expected towards the evening or at night, explained Žagar. According to him, in the part of Štajerska and up to Prekmurje in the late afternoon and towards the evening, wind gusts can reach up to around 80, maybe even up to 90 kilometers per hour. An orange weather warning for the north-west is in effect from 6am until 12pm on Sunday, while for the north-east it is expected from around 1pm until 12pm on Sunday. The cyclone has not yet said its last, the area is at risk of flooding.

That’s how it is in Europe now. I am also now personally affected by these problems, I live in the highlands and due to weather problems I cannot go to the valley – although I absolutely have to go there today. We also have snow in the midlands, in the hills and in some places in the lowlands.
Until recently, we were hiding from extreme heat. The sea in Slovenia also warmed up to close to 30 degrees Celsius. Life in our sea is not adapted to such temperatures. Increased evaporation of water also has significant consequences for the climate, among other things.
Slovenian climatologist dr. Lučka Kajfež Bogataj, also in the media, often explains the issue of climate change. Her current contribution in the Slovenian weekly Mladina is published below.

Due to the warm sea, the temperature rose even higher

For the second year in a row, we had the hottest summer since we have been taking measurements. The EU climate change monitoring service Copernicus (S3S) announced a few days ago that the world experienced record temperatures in June and August. From the beginning of the year to the end of August, the average global surface temperature was 0.7 degrees Celsius higher than the average from 1991 to 2020, which is the most in history, and also in the summer months alone, the surface temperature in the Northern Hemisphere was on average the highest so far.

C3S Deputy Director Samantha Burgess warned that the temperature-related extreme events that followed this summer will be even more intense in the future “if we do not reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately”. In short, the record temperature measured until August increases the “probability that 2024 will be the hottest on record.” “The temperature-related extreme events we experienced this summer will be even more intense and with more devastating consequences for people and the planet,” her warnings were summarized by the Slovenian Press Agency.

High temperature will have severe consequences. Among others, climatologist dr. Lučka Kajfež Bogataj mentioned persistence of high temperature of oceans and seas at least until December, which will affect precipitation patterns. The warmer the seas, the greater the chance of disproportionately heavy rainfall. “Indirect impacts will also be visible in droughts and heat, which will harm forests and affect their health. Agriculture will face problems. But these new conditions favor insects, the warm weather is favorable for mosquitoes, which increases the risk of spreading diseases such as the West Nile virus, which was previously limited to southern regions,” she said in an interview with Mladina.

“We should introduce everything that limits the carbon footprint. We must prevent new deforestation, but at the same time we should restore already damaged forest areas. It would also benefit us to immediately adapt what we have, so we start to manage space better and learn how to cool cities better. There will be profits in new ways of utilizing energy, but it is necessary to know that spatial planning is disgusting and that is exactly why we are delaying the next steps.”

dr. Lučka Kajfež Bogataj, climatologist

The only solution would be measures that would reduce the temperature by at least 0.3 degrees Celsius and would cause each future year to be at least a little cooler than the previous one. Lučka Kajfež Bogataj listed some measures that should be taken immediately: “We should introduce everything that limits the carbon footprint. We must prevent new deforestation, but at the same time we should restore already damaged forest areas. It would also benefit us to immediately adapt what we have, so we start to manage space better and learn how to cool cities better. There will be profits in new ways of utilizing energy, but it is necessary to know that spatial planning is disgusting and that is exactly why we are delaying the next steps.” (1)
