A war for food self-sufficiency that destroys from the sky
Yesterday’s (13. 7. 2024) downpour again ruined the annual harvest for many Slovenian farmers. Ice hail-projectiles up to 10 cm in diameter flew from the sky. Roofs, cars, facades of houses, crops, crops, tree branches were moaned.
It happens every few days, in different parts of Europe. Destruction is painful. But after a day or so people get up and start again. They overcome their fear and start again. They clean up the destroyed plants, comfort the frozen soil, cover the open wounds of the trees. They plant new seedlings. And – they help each other, they give each other planting material, they help each other to do urgent work… It’s true, something takes away from this furious destruction. But it opens people’s hearts and compassion and camaraderie are born. Human virtues, human values, healthy interpersonal relationships!
This is what has been missing among people for so long, this is what gives us new hope and colors our dreams.
I’ll tell you the story, very briefly. A woman lives near a small Slovenian town. She has a larger field where he grows vegetables during the growing season. The townspeople know her, she brings them crates of fresh vegetables every week and people like to buy plants based food directly from her. In the month of May, her dreams were shattered by ice projectiles, hail the size of ripe apricots, knocked everything down, short video for view.
According to Facebook, the video has become viral in a couple of days, people organized themselves and offered all the necessary help. A week later, her plantations were replanted. Although in her darkest hours she thought she would never recover, now she is again supplying the townspeople of the small town with crates of healthy plant-based foods. Many who did not know her learned about her through her ordeal and became her new customers. There are many such stories in our country Slovenia. Every day we learn about weather tragedies in other parts of the world from videos on social networks. I firmly believe that there, too, people are organizing and helping to rebuild.
She is again filling crates with excellent fresh vegetables for her customers. But whenever the sky darkens and heavy clouds roll in a storm, she is always filled with uneasiness. People pray in their most difficult moments, and it calms the soul and eases the heart.
Just as farmers and gardeners are hurt by the loss of crops, as plants and soil are hurt by damage, so consumers are also hurt by the possibility of losing a source of healthy plants-based food, which they buy directly from farmers. The above true story confirms that such consumers support the producers of their healthy food and, if necessary, come to their aid survival fears. But then a new hope emerges and people become not only stronger than they were, but also more human than they were.
Sometimes “something”, some event has to remind me, and sometimes it has to remind you: Life is made of such stuff as dreams. We often dream of being somewhere and life brings us exactly to such a place. It can be a place, an event, a person, circumstances… It’s true that whoever is bitten by a snake is also afraid of a twisted rope. But if you are over a deep chasm and need to get to the other side, a rope can help you. You can tie it to a strong tree, hold on to it well and push yourself over the chasm with all your might and it will carry you over to the other side. If I had believed that the snake was what the coiled rope was, I would never have made it to the other side. Therefore, when in doubt, take away the power of fear, make sure of what is true and live life! It’s the stuff dreams are made of.
Another classic from one of my favourite books of all time. We always need to be reminded. This clasic do it o for me on the best way:
“And what, exactly, is that metaphorical thorn for you?
“It’s madness
to hate all roses
because you got scratched with one thorn,
to give up all dreams
because one of them didn’t come true,
to give up all attempts
because one of them failed.
It’s folly to condemn all your friends
because one has betrayed you,
to no longer believe in love
just because someone was unfaithful
or didn’t love you back,
to throw away all your chances to be happy
because something went wrong.
There will always be another opportunity,
another friend,
another love,
a new strength.
For every end,
there is always a new beginning…..
And now here is my secret,
a very simple secret:
It is only with the heart
that one can see rightly;
what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

The Little Prince
